title: VFX Storyboard and Concept Artist

I was contacted by Ellen Poon, a supervisor I'd worked with on Men In Black, about doing VFX storyboards for a new film by Zhang Yimou ( Raise the Red Lantern, Ju-Dou, Not One Less ). 'Hero' was epic historical fantasy, produced by the 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' team, to be shot by Christopher Doyle, with costumes by Emi Wada, who'd done Kurosawa's 'Ran'. The screenplay had already been fully illustrated by some hong kong comic artists, and they were looking to expand on the FX sequences.

It was great fun soaking in the range of magical combat depicted in Hong Kong films. Steward Lee had an invaluable reference tape with hours upon hours of Jet Li footage. I sat in front of the TV for hours doing gesture drawings to get warmed up for the boarding. I spent about six weeks working on three major sequences, including the arrow attack, and a fight in the leaves between Maggie Cheung and Ziyi Zhang. I'm glad to hear that 'HERO' is finally getting released domestically. It's a really amazing film and deserves to be seen on a big screen.
